How to Remove a Background from a Picture on iPhone
Use iPhone subject lift, Preview, or an online background remover to create and save a clean transparent image.

You can remove a picture background on iPhone without opening a desktop editor. Apple provides built-in subject extraction for compatible photos, and newer versions of Preview can remove an image background directly. For more control over output color and downloads, you can use a background remover in Safari.
Method 1: Lift the Subject from a Photo
- Open a photo containing a clear person, pet, product, or object.
- Touch and hold the subject.
- Wait for the subject outline to appear.
- Choose Copy, Add Sticker, or Share.
- Paste or share the cutout into a supported app.
Apple describes this as lifting the subject from the photo background. It is useful for Messages, Notes, stickers, and quick compositions. See Apple’s current subject cutout instructions.
This method does not always create a convenient standalone file in the place you expect. If you specifically need a downloadable transparent PNG, use Preview or the browser workflow below.
Method 2: Remove the Background in Preview
On supported current iPhone software:
- Open the image in Preview.
- Tap the More button.
- Choose Remove Background.
- Save or export the edited image.
Apple documents the command in its Preview on iPhone guide. The exact interface can differ by iOS version, region, and device, so update iOS if the option is missing.
Method 3: Use RemoveLayer in Safari
Use the browser method when you want a transparent PNG, a white background, or a custom color:
- Open the Background Remover in Safari.
- Choose a photo from Photos or Files.
- Process the image.
- Compare the original and cutout.
- Select transparent, white, or another background color.
- Download the finished PNG.
The same page works on desktop, so you can repeat the workflow later without learning another editor.
Which iPhone Method Should You Use?
Use Lift Subject for quick copy-and-paste tasks, stickers, and messages.
Use Preview when you want to edit and save an image with an Apple app.
Use RemoveLayer in Safari when you want to inspect the cutout, choose an output background, or work with the same tool across iPhone and desktop.
How to Check Whether the Background Is Transparent
A white background is not the same as transparency. Open the result in an app that displays transparent pixels as a checkerboard, or place it over a colored slide or canvas.
If you see a white rectangle, one of these probably happened:
- The image was saved as JPG.
- The app flattened the cutout onto white.
- The sharing route converted the file.
- The source app copied only the visible appearance.
Use PNG for a portable transparent file. The Transparent Background Maker keeps transparency selected by default.
For desktop editors, difficult-edge advice, and a comparison of transparent, white, and custom outputs, see the full image background removal guide.
Improve Difficult iPhone Photos
Background removal works best when:
- The whole subject is in focus.
- Lighting separates the subject from the background.
- Hair and clothing are not cropped by the frame.
- The image is the original photo, not a compressed screenshot.
- Motion blur is limited.
Reflective products, glass, wispy hair, and similar foreground/background colors may still need another source photo or manual refinement.
FAQ
Can every iPhone remove a photo background?
Built-in features depend on the device and iOS version. The online background remover works in a current browser as long as the device can upload the image.
Where does the transparent image save?
That depends on the method. Browser downloads commonly appear in the Downloads folder in Files. A subject shared from Photos may go directly into another app instead of becoming a standalone file.
Can I make the result white instead?
Yes. Choose a white background before downloading, or use the dedicated White Background Maker.
